Privacy Policy
YouTube API Services
This application uses YouTube API Services to provide you with a personalized video feed for English learning. By using this app, you are also subject to the Google Privacy Policy. For users in the European Union, this app complies with the Google EU User Consent Policy.
Data We Access from YouTube
We access publicly available video metadata through the YouTube Data API, including video titles, thumbnails, and video identifiers. This data is used solely to display relevant English-learning content in your feed based on your interests.
We do not access, collect, or store any of your personal YouTube account data. We do not require you to sign in with a YouTube or Google account.
Data Caching
Video search results from the YouTube API are cached temporarily in memory on your device (up to 24 hours) and cleared when the app restarts. YouTube video metadata (titles, thumbnails, identifiers) is temporarily cached on our servers for up to 7 days to optimize performance, then automatically deleted. No YouTube audiovisual content is ever stored.
Information Stored on Your Device
Dica stores and accesses information directly on your device:
- Local storage — we save your onboarding profile, learning progress (review cards, streaks, goals), settings, subscription and notification preferences, usage-limit state, interface preferences, and your login session (sign-in tokens), along with other app and account state, in your device's local storage so the app keeps working between sessions.
- Temporary audio files — when you use voice and audio features, short audio files are stored temporarily in your device's app cache: your voice recordings (to be transcribed and assessed) and generated speech audio (so it can be replayed without re-downloading).
- Installation identifier — the first time you open the app, a random identifier (a UUID) is generated and stored on your device. It lets us recognize your anonymous session, apply usage limits, and (before you create an account) it keys the preferences and profile we store for you on our servers. Before you create an account it stays anonymous; after sign-up it may be linked to your account so we can migrate your data and fully delete it on request.
- Analytics identifier — our analytics provider (PostHog) stores its own identifier on your device to group your usage events. You can request deletion of your data, including analytics, by contacting us.
- YouTube player — when you play a video, the embedded YouTube player loads youtube.com inside the app, and YouTube and Google may place and access cookies and similar technologies on your device. This is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
Claude AI Service
This app uses Claude, an AI assistant by Anthropic, to provide English language corrections and conversation practice. Your chat messages are sent to Claude's API for processing. We do not store your conversation history beyond your current session.
Data We Collect
We collect the following data to personalize your experience:
- Your native language (selected during onboarding)
- Your English level (selected during onboarding)
- Your learning goals and interests (selected during onboarding)
- Language corrections from your chat sessions (to help you track your progress)
This data is stored securely in our database (Supabase) and is used exclusively to improve your learning experience. For full details on the providers we share data with and the information stored on your device, see the "How We Use and Share Your Information" and "Information Stored on Your Device" sections of this policy.
How We Use and Share Your Information
We use your information to run the app and personalize your English learning. To do this, we share specific data with trusted service providers who process it only on our behalf. We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for advertising. Each provider receives only the data it needs:
- Supabase (database, authentication and backend host) — stores your account details, onboarding profile and preferences, learning progress (review cards, grammar, streaks, goals), subscription status, and your language corrections, including the original sentences you wrote. All server-side processing runs here.
- Anthropic (Claude AI) — receives your chat messages and the watched video's context (title, description, transcript) to power the learning features: conversation practice, grammar exercises, corrections and explanations, full-sentence translations, and generating video keywords from your interests. Conversations are not kept after your session.
- DeepL — receives a word you tap and the sentence it appears in, to translate them into your native language.
- OpenAI — receives two separate inputs: (a) text you ask the app to play aloud (assistant replies, words, sentences, translations and learning-card content), to convert it into speech (text-to-speech); and (b) your voice recordings, to transcribe them into text.
- Microsoft Azure (Speech) — receives your voice recordings to assess your pronunciation.
- Google (Gemini) — receives video thumbnail images to build the visual context of a video.
- Google / YouTube Data API — receives search terms (including terms derived from your interests) and video identifiers to return public video information (titles, thumbnails, identifiers). It does not receive your Dica account identity or profile.
- YouTube embedded player — when you watch a video, the official YouTube player loads inside the app and the played video is requested from YouTube; YouTube and Google may collect player and device data (including via cookies) under Google's Privacy Policy.
- Supadata — receives a video identifier to fetch a transcript when YouTube captions are unavailable.
- PostHog — receives a device identifier, app-usage events, and profile/learning properties (such as your English level, native language, interests, daily goal, account type and subscription status) for product analytics. You can request deletion of your data, including analytics, by contacting us.
- RevenueCat — manages your subscription using your account identifier and store receipts.
- Apple and Google — handle sign-in (Sign in with Apple / Google) and in-app purchases. For Sign in with Apple, we store an Apple token on our servers so we can revoke the link to your Apple account if you delete your account.
